California Gov. Gavin Newsom orders state-wide shelter-in-place
April 2020
On March 19, California governor Gavin Newsom issued a statewide shelter in place order essential services such as gas stations, pharmacies, grocery stores, banks and doctor's offices will remain open and essential workers who can not work from home will continue to work in office.
"Seeing everyone with all their masks and gloves and like a lot of people would come in, the store will carry around like Clorox wipes and clean up everything before they touch it. So it was just kind of scary to see everyone," San Luis Obispo Target essential employee Rahnie Harris said.
Harris reports that her Target location is relatively slow compared to other stores in the area due to the smaller population in San Luis Obispo.
"We also have cleaning shifts. We have to clean the registers after every single person who comes through. And we're not able to do a lot of the things that we usually do, like returns and stuff we can't do, cause we'd have to quarantine the items," Harris said.
Prior to governor Newsom's order, California colleges began sending their students home as early as March 11th
"Every part of my education and extra curricular activities have been moved online," University of California Los Angeles student Becca Goldman said.
Goldman was asked to vacate her sorority housing by March 21.
I've been trying to get through quarantine by setting up a schedule because normally I have my daily routine...I've been getting up at the same time every day...making sure I'm on track with all my classes and assignments that I have to do. But also making sure that I'm balancing my mental health and physical health. But I try to go outside in my yard as much as possible and just kind of keep everything as normal as it can be at the moment," Goldman said.
As of April 6th, California has no plans to end their shelter in place.
