Indigo De Souza - “Hold U”
From her first words and her first music video shot, Indigo De Souza lets us into her world. Soft and clean, white and green, a collection of images and faces, hands and bodies. The tap of the hi-hat, her sleepy eyes and her simple needs put us in a trance. The song’s unexpected turn matches the video’s inexplicable, contagious energy. As the screen is filled and the tempo builds, Indigo’s life becomes full.
“Hold U,” as de Souza describes, is about a kind of simple love that allows others the space to celebrate expression, authenticity, humanity, and compassion. “Community is the purest kind of magic and can heal so much trauma and pain,” de Souza told Stereogum. “We only truly have space to process our lives openly if we feel safe and are encouraged to love ourselves.” This raw and all-too-human desire for companionship is evident in the sound and words of “Hold U.” When we can love, as de Souza and her community showcase, when we can all promise to hold each other, “it’s gonna be alright.”

The Lumineers - “Brightside”
“Brightside,” the title track off of The Lumineers’ fourth album of the same name, is a seamless, wistful yet powerful addition to their signature, nostalgic folk-rock sound. The song was recorded in a single day, according to Rolling Stone, and was inspired by the classic American love story. “It’s like a 15-year-old’s fever dream…glory and heartbreak,” lead singer Wesley Shultz said. The Lumineers’ also released a “Brightside” visualizer on YouTube. Dreamy clouds and melting orange skies fill the screen as the horizon draws closer and closer. It is the song for escape. For stepping into the sun. For reaching towards an uncertain but surely brighter future. Brightside’s additional eight tracks will be released Jan. 14, 2022.

What is the best song for a drive?
“Cycles of Existential Rhyme” – Chicano Batman
We all have our favorite drive—It’s when you are deep in thought, letting the wind hit your face and really feeling it against your cheeks. “Cycles of Existential Rhyme,” with its blend of tropical and psychedelic style, is an incredible amalgam of genre. Chicano Batman crafts a laid-back, easy-to-listen-to track, which radiates a feel-good spirit. Simply put, it’s the perfect soundtrack for a scenic, off-the-beaten-path ride. Let the instrumental guitar solo transport you as you go from point A to B. Sunnies on, windows down.

What is a song you are grateful for?
“All I Want” – Joni Mitchell
“I am on a lonely road and I am traveling, traveling, traveling, looking for something, what could it be?”
I moved to Boston as a scared 17-year-old boy, ill-prepared for what would be the biggest transition of my life. As I braced for the winter chill, I longed to bask in the summer sun of the suburbs of Los Angeles. I lost site of who I was and who I could become. Joni Mitchell’s “All I Want” exemplifies what it means to reconnect to the present. Her raw and honest tone lets her listener identify the things they want and need most. To write love letters, to knit sweaters, to truly feel. I will be forever grateful for Joni and her ability to let me find the things I needed to live again.
